Tour of the Unknown Coast

This annual bike race, spanning 100 miles, traverses some of the most beautiful scenery in California. The route starts in the Eel River Valley at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds in Ferndale to Rio Dell, through the Avenue of the Giants, and along bluffs overlooking the ocean along the Lost Coast, before returning to Ferndale via the famously curvy and steep elevation of the Wildcat.

Scotia Bluffs

The Scotia Bluffs form a 2-mile (3-kilometer) series of gray sandstone cliffs along the north bank of the Eel River near Rio Dell, California. Between 1883 and 1885, the Pacific Lumber Company built a railroad across the face of the cliffs to transport lumber to and from Eureka, California.

Drive Thru Tree

Drive your car through a Redwood tree or over a fallen Redwood log. The kids will like the two 2-story tree houses and the children's walk-through stump. Visit the Redwood Gift Shop. Tree is open from dawn til dusk.

Humboldt Botanical Garden

Humboldt Botanical Garden is a 44.5 acre site that currently has 5 biomes/botanical gardens for your enjoyment, many trails, resting areas, and an education center. Completed gardens include the Lost Coast Brewery Native Plant Garden, “All Happy Now” earth sculpture, Wildberries Natural Riparian Area, Sun Valley Greenhouse, the Moss Family Temperate Woodland Garden, and the Dedekam Ornamental Terrace Garden.

Chapman’s Gem & Mineral Shop

Chapman’s Gem & Mineral Shop is located just South of Fortuna along Highway 101. Their 7,500 sq. ft. showroom displays some of the most beautiful stones from around the world, as well as a petrified palm display, precious stones, Native American and pre-Columbian artifacts, fossilized animal and plant life, and a display of meteorite samples. Took an informal tour in their museum. In the shop, you can purchase everything from stones, minerals, crystals, and fossils to jewelry, books, carvings, and shells. Open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Humboldt Distillery Tours & Tastings

Humboldt Distillery is located at 735 10th Street in Fortuna. Abe Stevens founded Humboldt Distillery as a result of his love for Humboldt County and his affinity for chemistry and process improvement. A fifth-generation Humboldt native, Stevens graduated from Fortuna High School then attended the University of Chicago where he received degrees in chemistry and biochemistry.

Burl N’ Drift Gift Shop

Burl n’ Drift manufactures their own Redwood burl tables, clocks, cribbage boards, spoon racks, picture frames, Christmas ornaments, magnets, bookmarks, and custom engraved address signs. Environmentally salvaged wood is used and no trees are cut to manufacture their products.

Burl n’ Drift is located next to The Immortal Tree, a 1000 year old ancient redwood that has survived fire, flood, and the logger’s ax.

Eel River Brewing Company

Eel River Brewing Company (ERB) was established in 1994 and built on the historic site of the Clay Brown Redwood Mill. The focal point of the pub is the 30-foot long bar made entirely from recovered historic Redwood and Douglas Fir. The establishment continues to be a top dining destination in the county, with all of ERB's beers on tap as well as specialty brews that can only be found there. The menu boasts a wide range of food from BBQ to salads, sandwiches to seafood, all featuring local and organic Humboldt County products. In 1999, they became one of the first Certified Organic Breweries in the United States.

The brewing facility is not open to the public. Tours can be scheduled in advance.

Humboldt Bay

Sailing and windsurfing are popular sports in Humboldt Bay. 20 miles north of Fortuna, take Highway 255 at R Street in downtown Eureka to the Woodley Island Marina.

 
 
 
 

Blue Ox Millworks & Historic Park

Self guided tours watching Victorian craftsmanship and techniques. Visit a skid camp, learn about traditional boat building, and greet the blue oxen, Babe and Blue.

Fort Humboldt State Historic Park

Add a history lesson to your visit! Partially restored 1850's U.S. Military Post, this was General Grant's station prior to the Civil War and features a museum of logging history and fort history along with Native American sections.

 
 
 

Patricks Point State Park

This park is 24 miles north of Eureka, covering 632 acres and has a woodsy plateau 200 feet above the beach. Featuring hiking, nature trail, camping, picnic areas, outdoor museum of natural and area history and a sea lion lookout. Agate and jade hunting on the beach as well as fishing and tidepools.

Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary Walking Tour

In Arcata, approximately 30 miles north of Fortuna, take a guided nature walk (Saturdays only) to watch and photograph birds, enjoy the bay and foothill views and learn about this nationally recognized habitat. Encompassing 75 acres of former landfill.

Grandfather Tree

The Grandfather tree is world famous for its picturesque qualities. It stretches 245 feet tall with one of the largest tree trunks, 55 feet in circumference, on the Redwood Highway.
